My Classy Birthday Soiree

My birthday party was pure class people, pure class.  No one threw up, no one broke any glasses and I didn't spill anything on myself, it was the perfect introduction to my 28th year.  I wore pearls which I'm pretty sure set the tone for the evening.  :)

The weather couldn't have been any more perfect and we took advantage with a pretty picnic dinner at Trinity Bellwoods park with another classy couple who even brought champagne!

After dinner we went back to my favourite hang out spot - my backyard, obviously... to have some pretty cocktails with some pretty company...

I brought out my fancy dishes and made dainty appetizers that were gone before I had a chance to take a picture.

My signature cocktail was ammmmaaazzing and I would recommend you all try it.  It was from my 'Vintage Tea Party' cookbook.

Ingredients:
Iced Jasmine Green Tea (5 bags steeped with 200ml of boiling water for 2 minutes and mixed with 3 tbsp of sugar, add 500 ml of water and chill for 1 hour)
Champagne
Raspberries

Fill up a tea cup with half champagne and half tea, top with raspberries. (presentation is key)

Delightful!

(please note: A lesson I learned as I lay wide awake jittering at 4am is that green tea has more caffeine than coffee, best to only have a couple of these)

So how lucky am I?

As the clock struck 12 and my 27th year was officially over I was serenaded and fed the best cupcakes of life! Pure love.

With so much caffeine in my system by the time I went to bed I had lots of time to lay and think of how lucky I was... Lucky to have escaped the 27 club and of course lucky to be surrounded with the best friends a girl could ask for.

...and when I awoke on my actual birthday morning to several sweet birthday phone calls , James had prepared an Egg Coddler breakfast for me! Another classy affair... : ) I just love everyone so much....and that's a really great feeling....my heart is lifted.

It's Officially Summer!

It was the Summer Solstice yesterday (a day early because it's a leap year) and my mom told me that the way you're supposed to observe this day is by grilling meat, having a fire, and drinking fruit wine... That sounded good to me despite the fact  that I can't find any mention of this tradition anywhere on the world wide web but we made grilled sandwiches, biked down to the lake, drank fruit juice and had a fire anyhow... : )

Everything I do co-ordinates with my mint green bike...even my food. : )

Happy Summer!

Strawberry Muffins!

This doesn't happen very often but the other night I was inspired to bake.  I wanted to make something with fresh local strawberries while they're in season so I headed off to the grocery store in search of my supplies.  Not surprisingly all No Frills had in the way of local strawberries were moldy fly covered ones so I ended up going to our local organic grocer for some really expensive, but very tasty strawberries.  Since it's been WAY too hot to exercise lately I wanted these muffins to be on the healthier side so i opted for whole wheat flour...

Baking has never been my strong suit...it's too precise...I need room for mistakes... but I managed pretty well with these until I couldn't locate the Vanilla I had JUST bought... I may have overreacted in this situation...it was 9:30pm, I wanted to bake and it seemed as though I had purchased my vanilla and then forgot it at the check out and No Frills at this point was closed. I was pissed!  So I dragged James with me to the corner store, well, to the end of the street where I changed my mind because even if they had it, it was going to be 10X as much as it should be and these muffins are becoming the most expensive muffins I've ever eaten! So we turned back... : ( The wind had been taken from my sails and I sat on the couch disappointed.  Then I googled another grocery stores hours and found they were open for another half hour!  Let's go James!  (Poor James) We got to the end of the street and I started to  change my mind again.  It was getting late...by the time I get back it's going to be after 10 and maybe if I wait until tomorrow No Frills will replace my Vanilla for free?  We turned back...I sunk into my couch again and gave up on the muffins...  AND THEN... James found the Vanilla!  I had put it with my vitamins!  What's wrong with me?  Who knows...but I made the damn muffins! : )

They were pretty good!  Worth the effort? Ya I guess... ; )

Here's the recipe if you're interested...

and remember to buy local!
